Harry's Research

I would like more info on Magnus and Sarah. Does anyone know why the baby's last name was not Hokanson ?

In Sweden the sirname comes from the father's first name and it changes every generation.

Our ancestor, Magnus and his brothers and sisters were the children of Håkan Nilsson and Brita Persdotter. To get the his last name you start with his father's first name, Håkan, then add an s to show possesion and finally add son to show sex. So all of the boys in this family were named Håkansson. Likewise the girls were all named Håkansdotter.

Magnus's mother was Brita-Stina Persdotter. While we don't yet know who her parents were, we do know her father's name was Pers. But was it Pers Nilsson, Pers Svenson, Pers Olafsson or even perhaps Pers Persson? We just do not yet know.

Now back to the original question. Our ancestor, Magnus Håkanson (Lundell), and his wife, Sara Magnusdotter (Lundell)first child was Johan August. Using the method from above his last name was Magnusson. In fact all of the boys would have been named Magnusson and the girls would have been named Magnusdotter, but the family took the name Lundell sometime after they landed in Boston on September 20, 1853.

I have to be honest, Harry. I do not know much about our ancestors. I am happy to hear that someone takes such great interest in it and keeps researching to keep the rest of us informed. I found your information to be very interesting. Does anyone know in what year those in Sweden quit naming their children's last name, after the father's first name? Pam
